I'm sorry, I should have been clear on this point to. I think the way you're supposed to turn of system beep is to go to the menu: System -> Preferences -> Sound The right-most sheet of the Sound Preferences window is called System Beep. Simply click on the Enable system beep check box, in order to uncheck it.
