Despite going through all the modifications above, I still had the problem.
I am working on hp Pavillion tx1205us, recently upgraded to Hardy Heron.
However, I could solve the problem by installing an earlier version of
nvidia. "jockey-gtk" installs "nvidia-glx-new". I am not very good with
Debian programming. So, I installed "nvidia-glx-envy" instead using
"envyng-gtk" which has a nice GUI and does a nice job of enabling the
driver as well. Note by default it will install "nvidia-glx-new-envy".
So I had to manually choose an earlier version.
Given the warnings on the website of envy, I would be very grateful if
someone can post how, to enable "nvidia-glx" (which can be installed
using synaptic or apt-get).
