Aric: I have a USB keyboard pluged into an USB->PS/2 converter (and then
plugged in to the PS/2 port). Played with switching on/off legacy USB
options in the BIOS to no avail.

Kaz: I don't know, actually. I bought my pc from a friendly custom build
company who assembled it all for me. If it makes a difference I guess I
can try to open it up and have a look.

Oddly enough, both the ubuntu installer and later grub finds the hard
drive; it just freezes 2 seconds into boot...

- this isn't exactly the customer experience we want to give new ubuntu
users...?
