I have the same problem with an Asus A6Jc laptop, with a nvidia GeforceGo 7300. The screen goes black, there is some disk activities, and then nothing, it stays on, and I have to turn it off, and back on with a new session (the memory was not written to the disk). The problem disappeared when I deactivated the nvidia proprietary driver in the restricted manager, so I think the problem is between the nvidia driver and the ACPI kernel functionalities.
