Please attach the output of the printingbuginfo script for some basic
information about your printing setup and the printing related packages
that are installed on your system. The printingbuginfo script can be
found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript.

Does changing the printout mode from color to grayscale (or the other
way around) give any difference?

You could do a test with the Edgy Release candidate desktop CD which has
a newer cupsys and hplip. The desktop cd is is a live cd so you can boot
from this CD, no hard disk install is necessary. The Edgy Release
candidate can be downloaded here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/edgy/
