*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 222421 ***

I've done this same upgrade, and the first two entries of my menu.lst
look like this:
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic Default
root (hd0,5)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/mapper/dario2-root ro splash
initrd /initrd.img
quiet
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic Default (recovery mode)
root (hd0,5)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/mapper/dario2-root ro single
initrd /initrd.img
Of course, the initrd line is present in both of them.
Yours is not the only report of the initrd line going missing on upgrade, yet
I'm unaware of how any recent changes to the grub package would cause this, and
the problem is not reproducible in general (and the grub package in
hardy-proposed is no different from the version in the 8.04 release).
I'm marking this bug as a duplicate of the other, bug #222421. Perhaps
between us, someone can figure out what it is that's triggering this
(rare) initrd problem.
