I did some experimentation and it appears that this situation occurs on
kernels 2.6.24-18 and 2.6.24-19 (the most recent as of now). In Windows
XP and using kernels before the ones mentioned above the wifi connection
stays operational.

Using kernels 2.6.24-18+ the wireless connection associates with the
access point and then loses the association exactly every 12 seconds,
which seems rather odd. Network manager mostly keeps the connection up,
displaying zero signal strength. The gkrellm wireless plugin displays
link strength as 0 and link speed as 0, as when there's no associated
AP. I haven't tried with another wifi access point yet.

As a workaround, I'm reverting to kernel 2.6.24-17 for now.
