** Summary changed:

- Reproducible compiz crashes when running window animations with certain
applications in focus (Quanta, Firefox w. Google Spreadsheets)
+ Reproducible X server crashes when running compiz window animations with
certain applications in focus (Quanta, Firefox w. Google Spreadsheets)

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: compiz
+ Binary package hint: xserver-xgl

I have two laptops, both running Hardy Heron 32-bit:
Dell XPS M1330 with Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS with the proprietary driver
HP Pavilion dv4000 with Intel 915GM using i810

When running Compiz, X will _always_ crash if any of the following tasks
  are being conducted:

  1. Running Quanta Plus (confirmed by "everyone", see links below)
  or
  2. Running Firefox with Google Spreadsheets open (only confirmed by me so far)

Either X will crash directly or for certain when running a compiz effect such
as Fade-out, Exposé or Minimize all.
(If useful: Using the nvidia driver, the crash symptoms are described in the
following thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5278972 )

Attached is a nvidia-bug-report.log generated after a Google Spreadsheet
  in Firefox crash.

The fact that compiz+quanta = crash seems to be evident across many
  places recently:

  http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=860

The general opinion currently seem to be that it is an X Server or driver bug
instead of a Compiz one.
However, since at least I experience this regardless of using the latest
stable (Hardy) Intel 915GM or Nvidia graphics drivers, together with the fact
that there are _never_ any crashes when Compiz is disabled, I still feel that
compiz is the correct package to report this against.

Since the most important tools many inclusing myself use everyday in web
development is Quanta and Google Spreadsheets, this bug means that
compiz is a no-no when working. Also, this problem has been evident
since Feisty(!), I just always thought it was a i810-issue until I got
  my new laptop...

Hopefully this bug report can serve as a central location where we can
confirm, investigate and track this bug across the different projects.
