The internal LCD is 1024x768. The external monitor is a CRT capable of
a variety of resolutions; I was aiming for 1024x768 as a starting
point. Thus, I figured 2048x2048 should be big enough for the virtual
desktop. Here's xrandr -q, when I first plug in the external monitor
(messing with xrandr moves the asterisk around):

I don't really understand what's going on here. Are these modes the
resolutions listed in xrandr -q, defined in xorg.conf, or set somewhere
else? I had assumed it was the first, but it sounds like I was mistaken.

I'm attaching xorg.conf. Other than some changes to the Synaptics
Touchpad and the Display SubSection, I think it's standard.
