I have the exact same problem. And I am using i386 architecture. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, still the same. I replace the window manager to metacity and still got no joy. I will try what you did.
Also, there is an incredible amount of flickering on the screen, you actually can't get any work down because of that. The whole think keeps flickering and going black. I find it peculiar as all other star office packages are running smoothly.
