Neither Compiz nor my dual monitor setup worked with the free drivers.
(The xorg.conf file also got screwed up after switching drivers. I'm
afraid to try more driver tests now that I have everything running again
because this is my work machine.)

I did, however, figure out a pattern for a small reproducible test case
that can cause the type of problem I reported.

1) Open a gnome-terminal
2) execute a "clear" command
3) if you want you can do an "ls" or just have the prompt at the top of the
window
4) When the window is resized by pulling the top of the window down below where
the cursor was, the prompt will become invisible. (There are similar problems
with resizing using the bottom of the window.)

If you see the problem, try it without doing the "clear" command. For
me, no bug occurs. Perhaps there is something about the "clear" command
that permanently screws up a terminal. I tested this with both the
desktop cube and plane plugins and it was the same result; so this not
just a plugin specific bug but something more basic. Now that "clear" is
a suspect, I'll try to notice if problems *only occur* in windows in
which "clear" has been executed (probably not but we'll see).
