After some more web digging, I found a solution that works for me :
re-enable the power management daemon in System -> Preferences -> Sessions!
One more detail : I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on two machines, only one of them is
affected by this bug. On the other one I also disabled
the power manager, and the Quit menu works just fine.
