I have some free time now so I installed clean instlation of KUbuntu
8.04 back to the laptop. It is in Kde 3.x version. I did not manage to
get the crash again so far (running video few hours), however the the
performance is significantly lower.
I had few last weeks debian stable in the laptop and in simple clone
mode (visually similar like base randr settings) there is visible
difference. If i run just kaffeine (no other big applications) playing
DVD and chech with TOP the cpu usage it shows similar numbers, however
in the ubuntu (which uses newer version of xorg, ati drivers and the
other parts of the chain) is overall performance still on 100 percents
and sometimes dropping frames. With debian, where it is few versions
back, there was still several percents of performance left (so the
computer is responding while writing some e-mail and watching video at
the same time).
If i manage to get the crash again i will post the log, however when i
was experiencing it with updated system from 7.10 i did not notice any
error message in log after restart the Xserver.
If someone could advise me how can I help to improve the performance i
would appreciate it. I have just simple experience with developing. I
would like to use the new versions, however without buying new hardware.
Fallback to some distribution with XOrg <7.3 (or .2?) is the last option.
