Hello again. i have made some additional research across various forums. There is many problems with older ati cards unsuported by the binary drivers. In addition there is another problem i forgot in the beginning of the thread to mention. It may hang toghether with the original problem due some memory management problems. I attach to the mail a photography, so i hope it pass to the system. A text description: after some time of higher load of the system it becomes permanently slower (i bet it does the graphics subsystem, however it may be some laptop/chipset cooling feature). Mostly after some time of this slower mode (i do not remember it happened without it) when the system responds badly (but no applications shows higher CPU usage) there blanks the primary screen (reffered as LVDS) to black and on the secondary screen starts running stripes across the image (from bottom upwards, in range of seconds). Seems like some memory disorder. This is fixed by jumping to text console ALT+CTRL+Fx and back to graphical mode. After some time it does again. I have found in one thread advise (similar but another issue) to use packages from debian sid, there may be some changes made, but i am not friend with any packaging system or combination various distributions... (debian experimental: 1:6.9.1-2 debian sid: 1:6.9.0-1 vs ubuntu 8.04 hardy 1.6.8.0-1). However later i can try to upgrade to one of th newer versions. martin
