OK, after I reinstalled ubuntu 7.10 and enabled the following in
/etc/apt/sources.list:
http://ports.ubuntu.com gutsy/universe
The install succeeded.
Note that the reason for reinstall is not related to this (it is because
xorg crashes). I believe my update to 8.04 could be the culprit,
however, I could not verify that now.
In any case, I am marking this bug as Invalid. Thank Devid for the help!
