What is the output of "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" ?
You could kill you X-Session (gnome and all graphical apps) by typing
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE then attempt the "sudo apt-get update/upgrade" again.

packages and with the impossibilty of using apt-get source, since also
depending on dpkg)
