I looked into kdesudo and I think the problem is that it blocks the
"SIGCHLD" handler in line 159 of kdesudo.cpp. This prevents synaptic to
get the signals it needs. If I remove that line it works.

I strongly suspect that this is a problem with kdesudo, gksu does not
block SIGCHLD.
