Thank for your efforts to try improving issue. Having a good idea on whether a bug is an upstream or an ubuntu one usually require to know if ubuntu does change. The code issues are upstream ones 97% of the time since ubuntu has very few patches usually. Ubuntu users should open bugs on launchpad if they don't know what they are doing. Now you seem to have a clue about what you are doing and can probably reply to upstream questions yourself so you are welcome to open bugs directly on bugzilla.gnome.org. You can also open the bug on launchpad and add an upstream watch if you think that's something the ubuntu team should know about (a bug to fix during the current cycle for example)
