I add another comment with the hope it could help in debugging this problem:
I confirm that if THE FIRST THING you do after installing
firefox-3.0-gnome-support is to choose "always ask" for a mime type in
Edit->Preferences->Applications you get no effect; nevertheless if you try to
choose another application and then turn back on your steps choosing "always
ask", IT WILL WORK!!
By the way, choosing another application works too. So finally my experience is
that you receive a bug only if the first thing you want to do is to choose
"always ask" for any mime type.
