I had the same problem (using Hardy 8.0.4 x64 on a Dell D630), the solution I
found was to comment the psmouse line in /etc/modprobe.d/options. It looked
like this:
options psmouse proto=exps

so I put a # in front, rebooted and now /proc/bus/input/devices showed
my touchpad as such (it would not show before, although it used to work
as a normal mouse, not as a touchpad, synclient would not work as it was
complaining about SHMConfig not being set, although it was).
