I have also been encountering problems trying to install xubuntu (hardy heron) on a Sony K215Z. The installation process would hang shortly after the graphical environment came up.
After reading https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver- ati/+bug/220345 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4963984&postcount=24 I tried adding the following kernel options nohz=off highres=off This got me through the installation.
