I just upgraded my Intrepid partition and 2.6.27 was installed. I've booted it without the i8042.noloop=1 argument, and the touchpad worked! So yes, this bug has been fixed in 2.6.27.
One thing though - I found out that tapping didn't work anymore. Maybe that is just a setting, but if not I'll file it as a new bug against 2.6.27. In any case my touchpad isn't left for dead in the new kernel anymore!
