Okay well near as I can tell my original directions were accurate:

Valid EDID always starts with those first few bytes 0x00, 0xff, 0xff,
0xff, 0xff, 0xff, 0xff, 0x00, if that's any help. If your monitor is
putting out something other than that, then maybe we're just screwed
here...
