Just consider it as the X equivalent of the terminal application 'screen'. The principle is simple: one uses one physical screen, but on that screen, you can have any number of desktops, spaces where you can put windows to get them out of the way. A bit like having multiple screens (more desktop real estate) on the same machine, without the need for more physical screens.
