Have you considered using Asus eeePC optimized versions of Ubuntu? Two
come to mind, eeeBuntu and Ubuntu-eee.

Note that eeeBuntu is up to bersion 8.10 while eeeBuntu is still on
8.04.1.
If you'd rather not use eeePC optimized flavours of Ubuntu, you can use
Array.org's packages for regular Ubuntu in order to make it eeePC
capable: http://array.org/ubuntu/
