I would prefer IRC over sound/video any time because:
- with a good IRC client you can keep track of the entire
conversation easily
- writing down your thoughts makes it easier to organize them
- those with unsupported hardware (mine's an example, where
microphone isn't working) would not be able to attend a
sound/video meeting
