Clayton, Thanks for that. It answered the question of why I could never get it to work using WINE. Jim is a great guy and certainly has spent a ton of time and energy on Outpost.
I don't, unfortunately, have any experience with C or any other programming language. Last programming I did was in Fortran! I'm certain that as Linux and Ubuntu gain in popularity someone will find the answer. I can verify Jim's observation about telnet. Thanks for the update.
