Hi all, I have some recommendation regarding posts and replies on this mailing list.
Recommendations for those who try to help out. 1. Please try to understand the question of poster properly before pointing him to any site. If you are confused, ask for explanations. 2. Most of us already know how to use google. Let's assume that everyone does googling before sending mail to the list. So if you think some question can be solved by googling and the poster has not done it, don't reply to post. Let the poster figure out. 3. Try to give as correct and precise answers as possible. For example 'install xmms' or 'install vlc' are not correct answers to 'how to play mp3 files'. But 'install gstreamer plugins' or 'read restricted formats page on ubuntu wiki' are correct/precise answers IMHO. Recommendations for those who are looking for help 1. If the question is directly related to Ubuntu, see if you can find the answer in help installed on your system. System->Help and Support. Answers in there are official answers and you can complain to Ubuntu developers if they break anything. 2. If the problem is a complex and you can not find answer in the help then try searching on http://help.ubuntu.com/community/ or http://wiki.ubuntu.comor http://www.ubuntu-in.org. The answers on these sites are already tried by someone and are likely to work for all. 3. Don't use automated tools/scripts just because they save you from typing four command or opening two applications (ex. automatix). Try to learn how to do it the 'right way'. Cheers, Onkar
