Firstly, the initial intention was to give a fun way for ubuntu users to display their Ubuntu pride, sort of like a fan wears apparel branded with his or her favourite sporting team, and also to have this little button appearing in blogs and forums all over the place for people to think "hmm, what's this..." *click* "...oooooh! me want!".
The location check isnt foolproof, it's voluntary, and not validated. Some people simply dont like putting personal or even semi-personal stuff over the internet for various reasons. I respect that and decided to not enforce the fact for hope of getting more participation and more Ubuntu pimpin' Since it's launch, there has been great interest. More than I expected, since I've never really had such a successful idea before. People are checking back on an almost daily basis for either "Look! 4000 users are registered!" and "Would you have thought, there's at least -that- many people using warty still!". Stuff like that is what made me make mention of it on here. I agree it doesn't cover *all* bases in terms of the statistics gathered, and wouldn't want to make it compulsory or anything. But the data gathered *is* useful, imho. -- Sincerely Melissa Draper http://www.meldraweb.com Phone: 0404 595 395 P.O Box 1412 Lavington, 2641 -- ubuntu-marketing mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing
