I think it would be quite OK, eventually, if a successfully installed Ubuntu prodded a user, that if they wanted, they could get counted - saying it would help the community get to know the target user better. I also think the counter should query the registrant with a "How did you get to know about Ubuntu?" question - which could seriously help marketing (you know everyone uses that trick).
