Have I got it right that you want to target the marketing to bring
people into the community rather than just getting them to use Ubuntu?

I agree entirely that we need to do what we can to help people
contribute, but am not sure it is where we should be spending most of
our time, getting new users will get more people willing to contribute.

Some decent documentation about how the structure of the community would
be great for people looking to join it. I'd also like to see some kind
of central help wanted system, so that teams can post what they are
looking for people to do.

Spread Ubuntu will provide one method of bringing users closer to
being community members. SU is about two things: getting information
about Ubuntu to people who are interested, and giving Ubuntu users help
in spreading the word. 

The magazine could also run articles about the different ways to
contribute - profiling someone's journey from new user to contributing
etc.

What else were you thinking of?
