Hi

Great phase Robert, "profiling someone's journey from new user to
contributing".

I was thinking of delivering a profiling tool that assists someone
anywhere on the journey. One of the things that Paul Graham makes a
great play of in his book is log analysis. What people do where they
do it and how they do it. He suggested that by watching the route of a
user on the site you could figure out what pages belong where.

Jane any chance of some kind of web log access without personalised
details to see what is going on?
(ohh no what have I asked for)
In a former life I used to read the logs from a main frame by hand,
that and several other systems.

Even experienced people get the layers of the set up confused.
The other day I was asked by someone who had become a Ubuntu member
where they could get their Ubuntu email address. They were not aware
that it is set up by default.

Yesterday I was asked where does one find access to how the file
system is laid out.
How do permissions on linux work.

A couple of weeks ago one of the questions was, how did someone set up
a #ubuntu-* channel for a particular project.

These are "starting out" questions. Different people moving in
different directions over a vast project, the function of marketing as
I see it is to help the user eliminate mistakes as the venture around
the community and fast track them to where they want. Informing people
of where to go.

For instance we have factoids in the irc bot now.
?????? ???? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ??? ????? ?
/join #ubuntu-il

For the Arabic language or Saudi Arabia you are invited to join ????
??????? ???? ???? #ubuntu-sa

The first one was a total pain and cost Dennis K an amount of time to
program the second one I got in like that by accident.

That is dealing with l2r and r2l languages, before I got involved in
Ubuntu I never gave those things a thought.

At the same time I have found someone who had the skills and the
ability to make "gnubuntu/ubuntu-libre" become a reality and we meet
up and make things happen in that space. It looks like it will be
available soon.
For us the question is how to get room at the Ubuntu hotel (I actually
am rather well informed) but if you wanted to find a project channel,
how would _you_ do that.

If you wanted to be involved with localisation how do you even find
your way to do that?

If you want to be a coder the way forward is clear start with motu,
but if you go to launchpad (and how do you know about launchpad) will
you join the right group.

At the end of the day, it comes down to this can we help answer the
question:
What is where and what is the shortest route to it?

Regards,

Paul O'Malley
