Now, OpenSolaris has the advantage that Sun pays a number of people,
including Patrick, to work either full time or part time on the
project's marketing. However, I'm pretty certain we could get at least
some of this data for Ubuntu.

Question is: do we want it and, if so, how would we use it?

I know that in my own projects I can't get enough data. Server logs, Google Trends, Technorati links, application data, all help paint a picture. The problem is that as an individual you have to get pretty intimate with all that data and do it over time to really spot the interesting stuff. A larger group of people informally combing through the data would probably still produce some quality observations though.

Data is generally good (consider that a "yes" vote) but without specifics it's hard to predict how useful it would be.
