Daniel, i think this is a great idea ! and im with you in this. The world of MOTU is fun after all and now days ppl stand from the side thinking "what the *** are they doing" and more over "How are they doing it". Im not sure if it has to be an open day but the answer could also be in better documentation.
But i like the idea of a personal buddy from the inside. Most new people feel noobish when they have to ask questions more then 2x while they are full of them. I surely would want help every one out that has questions (with the limited knollage i gethered). That infact could be a team alone.
