Hello Nick,

Thank you for pointing me to the backport request page. However, while reading that page I see the following: "This generally makes backports an inappropriate avenue for fixing bugs. If a package in an Ubuntu release has a bug, it should be fixed either through the Security Update or the Stable Release Update process, as appropriate." Does this mean I should look into going down, perhaps, the Stable Release Update route? Or is a backport still the best choice for this issue? In either event I'm happy to get the ball rolling, I just want to make sure I take this down the best path.

Hi David,

The 14.04 version already has an updated version that fixes this problem.
If you would like to request that this version is also available in
13.10 then you need to file a backport request.
Please refer to this document on how to do this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBackports

In casy of any doubts or questions just ask here again

Kindest regards,
Nick

Hello,

I recently read an online thread describing problems that users are having
with the gmp-ecm that is available for Ubuntu 13.10. It appears that
gmp-ecm 6.4.2, when compiled with GMP 5.1.x, has a bug that will sometimes
prevent it from finding factors of numbers. You can read a discussion of,
and see the solution to, this on the ecm-discuss list here:
http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/pipermail/ecm-discuss/2013-July/004234.html

You can also see the bug report filed with Debian back in 2013-June here:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=713399

I am not familiar with bug filing procedures, or how to ask that a package
in this repository be updated, but I was hoping that by reporting it here
someone would be willing to update the package available to Ubuntu 13.10
(and later, if necessary). I believe the best solution would be to update
to gmp-ecm 6.4.4 as that has several bug fixes included in it. If you have
any additional questions, or would like additional details, please let me
know. Thanks for your time.
