Your mileage will vary, of course. Some computers are unusable for audio without the RT kernel, others really don't need it. The RT kernel tends to be unpredictable (which is why it is no longer the standard Ubuntu Studio kernel), so it is recommended that you use it only if the generic kernel (or specialized variants) does not give you good enough performance. -- -Brian David
