I've done all of that - turns out it's a driver problem.

I've reported a bug -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta/+bug/232490

In the meantime (as the issue has been present in the kernel ohci1394 driver
for over a year) I'm getting an ExpressCard firewire interface. Sucks to be
me.
