More accurately, Tagalog _evolved_ into Filipino. Our geo-location
(7,107 islands) forced us to adopt and speak different languages (or its
derivations) based on who influenced or colonized us. Filipino is more
unique because it is spoken (or at least understood) on any island in
the Philippines and abroad.
