Thanks Alan - I think you have solved it! Looking through the bugs I found this: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+question/85648
Adding i915.modeset=0 to the boot options fixed it! This is something that is mentioned in the beta release notes http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/beta#Known%20issues I have spent most of the morning booting it up and checking the /var/log/Xorg.0.log etc., looking at the bugs in Launchpad, check the forums before posting to this list. There are quite a few forum threads on ubuntuforums.org with people posting a similar problem. Hopefully this will get sorted quickly as the Dell I have is a very "standard" system (you could even get in PC World) and I was disappointed to see the latest Ubuntu not work with it straight away. However, I asked the question to right people, and got the answer almost immediately - for that you have to love the open source community :-) Thanks Again Ian Alan Bell wrote: > do you get anything on screen as it boots?
