I have a netgear router, on ASDL broadband and had exactly this problem.
I had it positioned flat on a bookshelf, under my DECT phone base
station. When uploading large numbers of files via ftp, or downloading
large files (e.g. iso files) it would drop connections to my other
computers.
Standing it vertically cured this problem, as it was able to keep
cooler. It does say in the manual not to put things on top of the
router, but who reads the manual (until something doesn't work)
