I have a principle of using whatever mail client Ubuntu chooses to give
me. Currently this is Thunderbird. In your terms, not one of the
'smarter' ones. There may be others like me, so thank you for editing.
I'd also encourage good trimming of posts, but for dealing with those
that aren't with Thunderbird, there is an addon which collapses quotes here:
