FWIW many teams, including ours, offer easy mechanisms for accessing IRC via the web browser. When you click on "Chat" on ubuntu-california.org it opens up the web interface for freenode. Users don't need to know what IRC is or how to configure a client they just chat through their web browser like they would on facebook.
