Sorry folks I had a brain fade when I wrote this and the issue is on a newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 DELL machine.
The analogue microphone comes through the speakers. Therefor we are getting feedback even with no program using audio running. I have looked around at "Sound Settings" but don't see anyway to fix this issue. Of course muting the microphone works or turning down the speaker volume but that is a non-solution. I had these issues occasionally years ago with alsa and knew how to fix it but not with pulse. Anyone else had this issue and solved it? Advise, gladly received. Thanks in advance for your attention.
