I installed Linux Mint 13, the Mate variety. I don't seem to get the crash anymore. The system looks pretty stable.
Interestingly, after installing the light-themes package (for a ...ubuntu-like look), I was immediately able to reproduce the crash. Removing light-themes or simply using the standard Mint themes fixed the problem.
