Same symptoms with an Acer TravelMate 8104 with ATI Mobility Radeon X700. Extra information: this was working perfectly until a few weeks ago, so perhaps the bug was introduced in a recent kernel upgrade?
I tried downgrading the kernel from 2.6.32.23.24 to 2.6.32.22.23 (i.e. from lucid-proposed to lucid-updates) with no luck.
