Downgrading the kernel further didn't help. It's only the screen that's blank - the keyboard is fine. In other words, I can do a CTRL-ALT-F1 and although the screen stays blank, I can log in and shut down cleanly (if I type very carefully!). CTRL-ALT-F7 may well restart X/Windows (there is some disk activity when I do this), but has no effect on the blank screen.
