Jurgen, That's what I've done, upgrading, which created the problem with QGIS1.7.4 which seems to dislike python-gdal 1.9, thus had to downgrade it to 1.8 But this is not a real solution because although I can start up QGIS 1.7.4 with python-gdal 1.8 with no error messages I get problems with the gdal raster module, as described in my former message.
