saravanan confirmed that the question is solved:
Seems like the system update changed my default audio control to pulse
audio. I upgraded again to alsa 1.0.20, now the default audio control is
Alsamixer and the sound works fine.
Do i have to do this each time there is a system update? is this a bug?
can i assign alsa mixer as the default audio control without the need to
re-upgrade each time?
