If anyone is planning to use the Ubuntu user space NFS server for servicing diskless systems, please heed this advice. DONT USE IT!!! I just wasted some time because of a "feature" (a bug if you ask me) of this server where it does not handle file locking properly. Diskless systems have problems with this. You can get more info from / usr/share/doc/nfs-user-server/README.CDF. In 'humble' openion there should have been a big WARNING on this package description.
Use the "nfs-kernel-server" instead.
