Hi, as the subject suggests, I'm thinking of upgrading my system, but I have two concerns. First, Hardy is listed as LTS (Long Term Support) and will actually be supported for some months after support for Intrepid has evaporated. In practical purpose, has anyone found an advantage (or disadvantage) in sticking with an LTS release?
The second question regards applications. As stated, I'm currently using 8.04, but I have updated some applications like Firefox and Open Office to their latest version (the latest, not the latest supported in Ubuntu). If I were to upgrade to 8.10, what happens to these? Also, what happens to software that I have installed from Debs that are not a part of the Ubuntu repository? In the past, when I wanted a new flavor of Linux, or a newer version, I'd usually back up my data and then start from square one with a clean install. In fact, such was the case on this machine when I went from Debian Etch to Ubuntu Hardy. This would be the first time that I've done a complete OS upgrade in the Linux environment. -- Rob Smith Sent from a PC Running Hardy Heron (Ubuntu Linux v.8.04) An Open Source alternative to the Microsoft Tax http://www.ubuntu.com/ --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ubuntu Linux" group.
